Like the Spice at the Roger Smith Hotel

Like the Spice at the Roger Smith Hotel
March 19th, 2010 – April 18th, 2010

featuring the work of Jason Bryant, Allison Edge, and Ross Racine
Opening Night Reception: March 19th, 7pm – 10pm
Like the Spice is very pleased to be involved with a very special exhibition at the Roger Smith Hotel. Located at 501 Lexington Avenue, the art-friendly Roger Smith Hotel has been committed to providing guests and visitors with a creative and entertaining experience that stimulates thought and conversation. That’s why we were so pleased to be invited, and why we think our artists will fit their style perfectly.

Starting out as a kid in rural North Carolina, Jason Bryant turned a fascination with drawing into a love for painting. Previously working as an assistant for Kehinde Wiley, Jason’s work often explores the person we are, as well as the people we pretend to be. His newest pieces, featured in this exhibition, are challengingly familiar, in a way that can often be difficult to place. Maybe you’re certain who they’re meant to be… until you suddenly realize that you don’t know them at all!

Allison Edge carries a sense of nostalgia in her work. With her command of light, she creates a mood that feels like a memory, like a happy fiction now become fact. Previously working as an assistant for Jeff Koons and McDermott & McGough, Allison carries a great love for her craft, and fans of her solo show Crystal Days will certainly want to revisit her work here.

Quebec-born Ross Racine has shown extensively across the United States and Canada. His “digital drawings” are hand-drawn directly by computer, creating communities that could be taken from some otherworldly Mapquest. They are in no way photographs, yet still carry a convincing feel, leaving you with the assumption that someone, somewhere, has been to see these communities in person.

Retrospective of the Decade

Retrospective of the Decade

6 Comments 08 January 2010

For Christmas I received the best present I have gotten in a really long time…

It was an awesome terra bite drive from the Panman Team. For those of you who don’t know, that’s a lot of space to put lots of media files.  What could make a girl happier? (O.K. flowers are cool. I love  flowers, but you get the point .)

Anyway, as a result of this really great gift, I was inspired to clean up my old storage drives, and during this process I started watching all the work I had shot and edited over the years. (Admittedly some pieces were better than others.) Nevertheless, as we approached a new year, I thought it was appropriate to take a look back …… not just on the last year, but the last ten.

This is a medley. Not just a year in review, but a cleansing of my drives and releasing of content I have been holding onto for years.  Hopefully it is a fond farewell. I like what I have done in the past, but as they say, your only as good as your last story… So alas, I must press on.

This year has been a huge period of change for me. I find myself in a completely different place than I was in January 2009, and I look around with amazement. The only constant in life is change, and therefore I must go with the flow and facilitate that momentum within my work.

I want to re-approach my traditional way of creating content and start the New Year off fresh, with a cleansed pallet.

I am not looking to banish the past, but rather release it. I want to evoke the storyteller inside me and really think about new ways to create and live, but first this process was necessary.

Oh one last thing…

There are a few shots I borrowed from other members of the Panman team, so thanks guys for making me look good….again.

The music is from the “IN C REMIXED” project. I highly recommend music lovers check it out.  Jad Abumrad, a composer and radio producer created the version I used. Among other things he’s one of the hosts and creators of RADIO LAB. I insist if you haven’t heard it, you must. It’s my lifeblood.  If you’re curious, start with THIS EPISODE, but listen to them all. You’ll Laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll learn something new. This is the direction I hope to take my story telling.

Damon Tommolino at the Roger Smith Hotel

1 Comment 02 September 2009

On Thursday August 20, 2009 Damon Tommolino opened his most recent art exhibition in the Solarium at the Roger Smith Hotel. His body of work reflects the concentration of time and space of sequential motion.

Artist Statement:

The point of my paintings is to provoke as much thought as possible. I try hard not to overly point a viewer in any one specific direction. I don’t believe this is my job as an artist. I would much rather present several ideas or options or paths for any viewer to take throughout any given piece. Therefore, I purposely leave a certain amount of ambiguity in the work. At its best, viewers will be able to make connections between the characters I paint and their own lives.

I strive to bring awareness to the way in which we live. My paintings reflect our society, our nation, and our most intimate relationships. Is there room for improvement or growth in our lives?

Love the Art. Molly Barnes and Damon talk about artist etiquette , and the nature of collectors in an art market.

4222 Studio Visits: Tommolino

Tommolino said that he would let me do the studio visit under two circumstances: one, that we drink a bottle of fine brandy together, two, we play chess. Being an obligatory creature I had no objections to Damons clauses. Then he smiled. Thats what Damon Tommolino is like: a morsel of truth encased in an even finer casing of truth, which is always humor, the heart of the Universe.

Market Place: The Professional world and Art Communities

A professional is anyone who has logged 10,000 or more hours at their given profession and should have the qualities of a person who lives breaths whatever they do.  By working with professionals that belong to a community we will engage group interests in order to expand our brand.

The Art Community

In an art community there are several micro-communities that function in a cross pollinating way. These micro- communities cannot exist without each others.  There are the artists (sculptors, painters, ceramicists, media artists, performance artists, instillation, architects, etc.) all of which again can break up into further smaller communities within a given medium/time period/school of thought. There are the dealers, curators, gallery owners, and collectors all of which have a high stake in the success of the above mentioned group of artists. There are also the academics (critics, art theorists, philosophers, anthropologists, demagogues, and students.) All of these types of professionals function in an interrelated way.  It is our goal is to draw these communities together and be a resource for information and network.

Panman Arts has been entrenched in the world of art in more ways than one. We have been diligently working this rubix -cube from the corners inward. Our roles span the gamut of Artist(s), Documentarians, Curators, Art Dealers, Art Collectors, and Art Theorists. We feel that the art community is a living, breathing organism that must be approached from all sides at once. Here we have laid out our map of approach and interaction.

Penguins in Pancity!

Everyday I ride the train into the city. Here is a tapestry of what that journey represents within my psyche. Back and Forth, we go…My objective to make a panman mixtape. What is Pancity? Where is Pancity? These are the questions I am thinking of as i ride the tin can that takes me farther away, closer. Panman said that the explosion must happened outwardly. I believe that two explosions must happen to balance each other: implosions to explosion. Wait for the ending please.
