ROGER SMITH NEWS: Story Telling

No Comments 15 December 2009

PART 1 Emotions

“How do we get people to care about our ideas? We make them feel something.”

- Made to Stick: Why Some Ideas Survive and Others Die. Chip Heath & Dan Heath

PART 2 “Its all about the people.”

The characters make the story interesting. Last week we met with a collection of Chinese Television Executive to talk about the Real Time Media, Live broadcasting online and the effect of Social Media on an industry. With a language barrier we broke ground when we had each of our guests introduce themselves directly into the camera. With the share cameras on the market like the flip or the Kodak Zi8 it is an interesting moment when you realize that you can turn the camera on yourself.

“The stories told here show how individuals, sometimes by design, but often by accident can change the course of history.”

10 Days That Unexpectedly Changed America.  Steven M. Gillon

PART 3 To Summarize

“Here is our checklist for creating a successful idea. A Simple, Unexpected, Concrete, Credentialed, Emotional, Story.”

- Made to Stick: Why Some Ideas Survive and Others Die. Chip Heath & Dan Heath

We are interested in the art of story telling as a way to engage with people. With people as our subject we build relationships surrounding the stories that are told. We look to listen, engage and share your stories. So please engage us with your story and become part of our culture. If you like it, Share it, and be sure to make a comment.

Thanks for watching.

Roger Smith Shorts ‘09 (Festival Workshop) Winner: Dmitry Povolotsky

No Comments 01 September 2009

Congratulations to Dmitry Povolotsky, who was presented the Roger Smith Shorts ‘09 (Festival Workshop) Bronze Sculpted Creativity Award for his film “Clean the Room” on Saturday, August 22nd. The Judges Panel, which included James Knowles (President, Roger Smith Hotel), Ben Famiglietti (The Weinstein Company), Neil Alumkal (5WPR), Adam Neuhaus (Original Media) and Tommy Popps (Independent Producer) based their decision on 3 criteria: vision, craft and execution.

After deliberation, the judges decided on “Clean the Room” for it’s simple but concise execution; as with all the films, this modern day Cinderella story takes place all within the hotel, in which a dream comes true while a maid cleans the room, all under 6 minutes.

About the Director

Dmitry Povolotsky is a writer, director, and choreographer living in Brooklyn. At the age of ten, he was selected to attend the Bolshoi Ballet Academy in Moscow to study classical ballet. After graduating from the academy nine years later, Dmitry was awarded a full scholarship to Juilliard in New York City where he received a BFA in modern dance and choreography.

Dmitry remained in New York City to perform with the Metropolitan Opera Ballet for eight seasons and to teach ballet and choreograph for inner city youth at the Harlem School of the Arts.

After making his first short film in 2003, Dmitry left the dance world to study film at Columbia University Film Division. PAL/SECAM, his thesis film, has played at 40 film festivals all over the world, has won several prestigious film awards and was sold to 6 territories so far.

4222 Studio Visits: Tommolino

Tommolino said that he would let me do the studio visit under two circumstances: one, that we drink a bottle of fine brandy together, two, we play chess. Being an obligatory creature I had no objections to Damons clauses. Then he smiled. Thats what Damon Tommolino is like: a morsel of truth encased in an even finer casing of truth, which is always humor, the heart of the Universe.

Market Place: The Professional world and Art Communities

A professional is anyone who has logged 10,000 or more hours at their given profession and should have the qualities of a person who lives breaths whatever they do.  By working with professionals that belong to a community we will engage group interests in order to expand our brand.

The Art Community

In an art community there are several micro-communities that function in a cross pollinating way. These micro- communities cannot exist without each others.  There are the artists (sculptors, painters, ceramicists, media artists, performance artists, instillation, architects, etc.) all of which again can break up into further smaller communities within a given medium/time period/school of thought. There are the dealers, curators, gallery owners, and collectors all of which have a high stake in the success of the above mentioned group of artists. There are also the academics (critics, art theorists, philosophers, anthropologists, demagogues, and students.) All of these types of professionals function in an interrelated way.  It is our goal is to draw these communities together and be a resource for information and network.
